Claude API (Anthropic) ↔ Google Sheets integration

An AI agent on Claude reads the rows of your Google Sheet, sorts requests, fills columns and writes summaries, and a person checks the drafts before they go further

Many businesses run on one shared Google Sheet: requests from the website, answers from a form, a list of clients, a weekly report. The rows keep coming, and someone has to read each one, decide what it is, copy the phone number into the right column and write a note. The Claude ↔ Google Sheets pair puts an AI agent next to that sheet: it reads new rows, sorts them, fills the agreed columns, drafts replies and descriptions, and answers questions about the table in plain language. It writes only into the columns you allow, and anything meant for a client waits for a person to approve it. Below: what exactly moves, which scenarios we cover and which capabilities of both systems we rely on.

What moves between the systems

  • Google Sheets → Claude API (Anthropic)New rows with text written in any form, such as website requests, form answers or client reviews, are picked up every few minutes and handed to the agent to read.
  • Claude API (Anthropic) → Google SheetsThe agent writes back into the agreed neighbouring columns: request type, product mentioned, name, phone and a one-line summary; a row it is unsure about is marked «check».
  • Claude API (Anthropic) → Google SheetsFor each row the agent can draft a reply to the client or a product description into a «draft» column; only rows a person marks as approved go further.
  • Google Sheets → Claude API (Anthropic)A question in plain language («which clients have not ordered since spring») is answered by the agent from the sheet: it chooses which ranges to read, and our code reads them and hands back the rows.
  • Claude API (Anthropic) → Google SheetsOnce a week the agent reads the report sheet and writes a short plain-language summary of what changed into a separate tab, naming the cells each statement comes from.
  • Claude API (Anthropic) ↔ Google SheetsA large archive of old rows is processed overnight in batch mode, and the results are written back in portions that stay within Google's per-minute limits.

What we connect

  • We agree with you which sheet and which columns the agent reads, which columns it may fill, and which it never touches.
  • The connection works under a separate service account: you share the needed file with it the same way you share with a colleague, and it sees nothing else in your Google Drive.
  • You create a Claude account for your company; the agent runs under it, you see the usage in your own console, and it is billed to your account, not through us.
  • We describe reading a range and writing a column to Claude as tools: the model decides which one it needs and returns a structured request, our code carries it out within the columns you allowed.
  • Scheduled runs are set up under a technical account, not a staff member's, so the automation does not stop when an employee leaves.
  • For the first week the agent writes only into draft columns and a person checks every row, then we widen what it may fill on its own.

Automation scenarios

01

Requests read one by one

Before a manager reads every new row from the website form, decides whether it is an order, a question or spam, and copies the phone into the right column.

After the agent sorts the rows and fills the columns within minutes, and the manager starts with the ones marked as orders.

02

A hundred product descriptions

Before the catalogue sheet has names and characteristics but no descriptions, and writing them is postponed for months.

After the agent drafts a description for every row overnight into a draft column, and a person edits and approves them in a few sittings.

03

Nobody reads the report

Before the weekly report sheet has twenty columns, and the owner scrolls it without seeing what changed.

After a separate tab has a short summary of the week in plain words, with the cells each line comes from, so any number can be checked.

04

A question means a new filter

Before to find out which clients stopped ordering, someone builds filters and formulas and gets the answer the next day.

After the owner asks the agent, and it answers from the sheet with the rows it used.

How it works technically

For those who want to check: each point links to the official documentation page it comes from.

  • By default Anthropic does not use inputs or outputs from its commercial products, including the platform connection, to train its models, unless the account owner explicitly allows it.

  • Tool use: Claude decides when to call a function described by the client based on the request and the function's description, and returns a structured call that the client's application executes.

  • Batch processing: the system creates a batch from the submitted requests and processes it asynchronously, each request independently, for tasks that do not need an instant answer.

  • Claude reads and writes in most world languages that use standard Unicode characters; performance varies by language and is strongest in widely spoken ones.

  • Sheets API quotas are per minute and refill every minute; Google's own example is a read limit of 300 requests per minute per project.

  • A service account is a special kind of account used by an application rather than a person; access to a specific Google Sheet is granted by sharing the file or folder with the service account's email address.

Limits

The limits come from both systems. The model can be wrong: a summary may miss a detail and a filled column may be inaccurate, so its output is treated as a draft that a person checks, and nothing goes to a client without approval. Claude has per-minute limits that depend on your account level, and the usage is billed to your own Claude account; a batch that is not finished within a day expires, so overnight runs are sized accordingly. Google Sheets does not report a new row by itself, so rows are picked up on a schedule of minutes, not instantly, and Google counts requests per minute, so large writes go in portions. Scheduled runs belong to the account that created them, which is why we use a technical account.

How to start

Three steps from a first message to work on your project.

  1. 01

    Leave a request

Describe the task in the form — in text or by voice. Budget and timing are optional.

  2. 02

    We review and estimate

A developer studies the brief, asks about anything unclear and sends an estimate.

  3. 03

    We start

Once scope and price are agreed, the work begins.

Questions

Will the data from our sheet be used to train the model?
By default, no: Anthropic states that inputs and outputs are not used for training without the account owner's consent. The agent also sees only the file you shared with the service account, and only the columns we agreed on.
Can the agent overwrite our numbers or delete rows?
No. Our code only writes into the columns you allowed and never deletes rows, whatever the model asks for. Your own columns and formulas stay as they are.
Does it understand Ukrainian and Russian text in the rows?
Yes: the model reads and writes most languages, though quality varies by language. We set the language of the filled columns explicitly, and during the first week a person checks the results in each language you use.
How quickly is a new row processed?
Within minutes, not instantly: Google Sheets does not announce new rows by itself, so the sheet is checked on a schedule. For requests that cannot wait even that long, it is better to send the website form straight to a CRM.
